I purchased this book for my husband and kids for Christmas. I crossed through "Soldier" and wrote in "Marine" with a black sharpie. I also threw in some USMC references/jargon/rank/CH 46 etc. It was a hit... and a lot of fun since dad was deployed for the 2nd Christmas in 3 years.

If you dont mind advertising smoking to your child, then this book would be ok with you. However, if you don't want your child to think that smoking is the cool thing to do, then you may not want to buy this book. At first, I was very excited when I seen this book on the shelf. I have a 4 year old who has already gone through two Christmas' without his daddy. With that in mind, I thought it would be great to help him understand what Christmas is like for his daddy down range. Upon opening the book and thumbing through it, I was quickly turned off with the fact that the main character was smoking a cigar on several pages. I put the book back on the shelf in disappoinment. It also portrays the "tough guy soldiers" as smokers. Just not something that I agree with. Even if the story is good, I know my son would've noticed and would've asked me about it. So be aware if you plan on sharing this book with your little one.

My husband is a former Marine, and he saw this book and we had to get it for our first born. As for the people "complaining" about the smoke encircling his head like a wreath... Grow up, it's a book not an instruction manual to your children.

My son and I really enjoy this book. My husband is deployed and missed Christmas. It's a nice, easy read and has great illustrations. I recommend this book to all military families, deployed or not.

One Christmas eve in the desert a group of homesick soldiers are visited by the Santa of Soldiers, and in a fine realistic rhyme inspired by the classic 'Night Before Christmas' comes a soldier's observation of this wonder, which will intrigue and comfort military families separated by war. There's a decidedly different holiday atmosphere here: "When what to my thrill and relief should appear, but one of our Blackhawks to give the all clear: more rattles and rumbles! I heard a deep while, then up drove eight Humvees, a jeep close behind...each vehicle painted a bright Christmas green with more lights and gold tinsel than I'd ever seen."
